Sunday Snippet – Cypher by S.G. Rogers

The tunnel up ahead was caved in and impassable. Cypher’s shoulders slumped.

“I-I don’t know any other way around.”

“We passed a lot of other passageways,” Joss said.

“I don’t know where they lead. I always stayed in the main tunnel so I wouldn’t get lost. Joss, perhaps we should go back.”

“Shh.”

“What?”

“I hear something.”

“What do you hear?”

“A ringing.”

“The air isn’t that good, Joss. I imagine your ears are ringing.”

“No, it’s like a bell.”

Cypher cocked her head to listen. Moments later her eyes grew wide. “I hear it too! Do you
think there could be somebody else down here?”

“I don’t know, but it’s getting closer.”

Joss put his arm around Cypher and held her tight. Someone or something was approaching, and they were trapped in a dead end.

Cypher, a romantic fantasy novella by S.G. Rogers

Although she has no memories before the quake that destroyed the kingdom of Augury, Cypher McCall holds a steadfast hatred of the repressive Cauldian regime now ruling the country. Because her magical gifts are deemed subversive, she does her best to avoid detection. Unfortunately for Cypher, however, she’s too beautiful to ignore. After a Cauldian contingent arrives in her hometown, a chance encounter leaves her repulsed by the arrogant Prince Ewan and attracted to his distant cousin, Lord Joss.

When she learns Prince Ewan plans to tear down the ruins of nearby Castle Augur, Cypher vows to stop him. Although handsome Lord Joss tries to protect her from his vindictive cousin, Cypher can’t bring herself to trust the enemy. At the same time, nightmares and dreams nudge her toward reclaiming childhood memories. She stumbles on a silver key that she hopes will unlock her past, but first she must confront a long repressed horror at the Castle Augur ruins.

Can Cypher evade Prince Ewan long enough to recover her memories? Is Lord Joss all that he seems or is his charm a ruse to ensnare the unwary? Finally, will the knowledge of her true identity tear Cypher apart or empower her to restore everything she ever loved?

S.G. Rogers’ Cypher – Release Day Party

UPDATE:  Using Random.org, Onisha’s number came up! Congratulations to Onisha, and thank you to everyone who left a comment on my blog. 😀

“You can’t raze Castle Augur. It’s a national landmark! How dare you even think of desecrating the place where so many people died!” Cypher exclaimed.

Prince Ewan sat with his boots up on a desk, his hands laced behind his head. “If it isn’t the pretty barmaid.” He swung his legs to the floor and stood. “Castle Augur is an eyesore and a danger to the community. I’m building a summer palace on the foundations. Don’t worry, there will be a job waiting for you as my servant once we’re through.”

“I’ll never wait on you. You’re not fit to kiss my Augurian backside, Your Highness.”

Fun Fact About Norse Mythology – Happy Tyr’s Day

Did you know the days of the week are named after a mixture of Roman and Norse deities?  The weekdays stemming from Norse origins are indicated in red, below:

Sunday – Day of the Sun

Monday – Day of the Moon

Tuesday – Tyr’s Day (god of war)

Wednesday – Odin’s Day (Old English “Woden”) (ruler of Asgard)

Thursday – Thor’s Day (god of thunder & lightning)

Friday – Freyja (goddess of love & beauty)

Saturday – Day of Saturn

Tomorrow (Wodensday), I’ll fill you in on a little Odin lore.  In the meantime, you might enjoy another factoid.  Despite all rumors to the contrary, Viking helmets had no horns.  There’s only one Viking helmet that has survived as an artifact and it was…hornless. (See Wikipedia photo) (For another view, go HERE).  In runestones, illustrations and artwork of the age, Viking helmets were depicted as having either a rounded or conical top (like half a football). If you’re interested in Viking Age arms and armour, Wikipedia has a good article HERE.

I don’t know how authentic all the helmets are at Dark Knight Armoury, but they have a really cool website.  You can go HERE to have a look around.

Happy Tyr’s Day.

In Asgard City, rules, regulations and bureaucrats stymie Dani’s quest.  Increasingly frustrated and desperate, she seeks help among powerful immortals. Unfortunately, Dani becomes ensnared in a devious trap that may leave her stranded and alone in Asgard forever.

Aegean Intrigue Interview! Mystery on the Greek Island of Paros

UPDATE:  AND THE WINNER IS…KAY!

I’m here with author Patricia Kiyono and her main character, Francine Vasileiou, of Aegean IntriguePatty has graciously offered to give away a digital copy of her novella, so leave a comment below for a chance to win!  The winner will be selected just before midnight, EST, on Friday, March 23rd.  Good luck! ~ S.G. Rogers

Back Cover Blurb: Someone has been stealing priceless Greek artifacts and it’s Alex Leonidis’ job to uncover the thief. His prime suspect is beautiful archaeological graduate student, Francie Vasileiou. His plan is to join in an archaeological dig and catch her in the act. All he has to do is keep his mind on his job, and not on the way his lovely suspect warms his heart. He’s learned the hard way not to trust fragile-looking women who seem to need his help.

Francie wants to get her PhD and become an archaeologist, like her famous father. The sudden invitation to participate in a dig on the beautiful Greek island of Paros is a wonderful opportunity. She has no time for distractions like Alex, the handsome Project Director. Experience has taught her to stay clear of handsome, charismatic Greek men.

On the shores of the Aegean Sea, Alex and Francie work together, searching for treasures from Greece’s past. While pursuing their goals, they discover some of the truths they had believed to be carved in stone may have been flawed.

Welcome, ladies! Thank you for coming to chat with us today. Let’s talk to Francine first.  Francine, why do you think Patty choose you to represent her?

I think it’s because she thinks I’m a lot like her. Her parents aren’t famous, but I’ve traveled a lot, like she has. She’s also spent a lot of her life in schools, and she doesn’t have a lot of patience with people who don’t put forth the effort to do a good job.

So you’re a world traveler?  Tell us more!

I think I’m your average college student, really. I’ve always loved going on digs all over the world with my father, and in order to do that as a career I need to get my PhD in archaeology. I’ve spent a lot of time in Montreal with my mom’s parents and in Greece with my father’s family, and I went to college in LA, so I feel like I have three homes.

Wow. Tell us where you live and what draws you there?

I’ve lived in lots of places, but right now I’m going to school in Athens. This is where my father used to teach, and I wanted to earn my PhD here. And Professor Theo, my father’s friend, was here.

Is there anything you wish Patty had kept her mouth shut about?

I suppose the whole mess about why my parents aren’t a part of my life any more. That’s kind of humiliating, and it makes me sad because I still love both my parents.

Tell us about Alex. What drew you to him?

He’s a very dynamic personality. He’s a leader, but he’s also a good listener.

What really pushes your buttons?

Incompetence. Laziness. So many times I wanted to smack Yannis. Not only did he not know what he was doing, he waited around for someone else to do things, or for someone to tell him to do it.

What’s your perfect day…and why?

Digging in the dirt until I find something left from an ancient civilization. Sharing it with the people around me. Being able to learn something about the world that the user of that artifact lived in.

What is your biggest fear?

My biggest fear would be to give my heart to someone who will crush it again. That’s already happened with my parents, and with Leandros (my college boyfriend), and I don’t think I could survive it another time.

Thank you Francine!  Now, Patty, it’s your turn.  Why should readers be interested in Aegean Intrigue?

I went to Greece in the spring of 2008. As part of her degree in writing, my youngest daughter did a Study Abroad program on the sunny island of Paros. Of course I HAD to visit—just to make sure she was okay, you understand. My husband is not a traveler, so I talked a good friend into going with me. I was in awe of the living history there and the way it is incorporated into every day life. The people there KNOW their history and are willing to share it with everyone.

I can’t say that I’ve always had an interest in archaeology, but I’m a history buff, and digging for artifacts is part of that. Of course, visiting the ancient ruins on Paros as well as in Athens, I wondered about the people who do that type of work. So I bought some books while I was in Greece and checked out several online sources when I got home.

As far as why readers should be interested, I think the central message of the story focuses on the way we treat our significant others. Sometimes this is a cultural issue, but when women are treated poorly, it bothers me. This was something I noticed in Greece. My daughter commented on it, and when I got home I read more that confirmed it. Traditionally, Greek women are not encouraged to be independent. Especially on the island, local women were not seen outdoors after the supper hour. They were at home. Being a very independent woman, this bothered me. And I decided to write a story that showcased not only the beauty of the island, but the dynamics between the men and women there.

Don’t forget to leave a comment for the chance to win!

Mad About Princes

What is it about a fairytale prince that captures the imagination?  A young, good-looking and masculine royal usually wins the day—and the hand of the beautiful maiden.  For me, however, the above-mentioned qualities form only the base of an engaging hero.  There must be something more that renders the man worthy of the heroine, be it in words, deeds…or simple kindnesses to strangers. Any prince can engage in feats of derring-do if he thinks the object of his affection will be impressed.  A true hero, on the other hand, renders kindnesses to others when he believes he’s unobserved…

Excerpt:

After she’d eased her hunger, Samantha’s temper began to improve. The room emptied out a bit and she had a direct view of Wills. He and Joe had struck up a conversation with several other travelers. The prince was laughing at a story Joe had just told. The innkeeper’s daughter hovered nearby. Staring openly in admiration, the awkward, homely girl took every opportunity to keep Wills’s tankard full. To his credit, the prince was kind. He thanked her profusely, and complimented the meal and accommodations. Samantha noticed him slip the girl a gold coin when no one was looking.

As she examined Wills’s profile in the lamplight, Samantha had to admit he was unusually handsome. The prince had an easy, open manner around people and was a natural leader. Her brother, David, would certainly have enjoyed his company. It was a shame her relationship with Wills had started so badly. Samantha felt an unfamiliar stab of regret. Under different circumstances, she might have liked to know the man better.

Wills glanced over and caught her staring at him. Samantha blushed and shifted her eyes to Nanny. The woman had a knowing smile on her face.

“What’s so amusing?” Samantha demanded.

“He’s a good-looking man, isn’t he?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she replied. “I wasn’t even looking at Wills.”

“If you weren’t looking at him, how’d you know who I was talking about?”

Samantha bit her lip. “That’s enough, Nanny.”

Up until now, Prince Wills and Princess Samantha have had a combative relationship.  Did one simple, unobserved moment begin to thaw Samantha’s heart? Hmm. Samantha doesn’t realize it yet, but she just telegraphed her interest in the hero.  What does our young hero do in response?  To answer that, you’ll have to read the rest of the story.  But I’ll say this much—I’m mad about Prince Wills.

Long and Winding Road

So one morning I woke up and decided to write a romantic fantasy.  I sold my first manuscript to a well-established romance publisher and Clash of Wills is coming out on Leap Day.

Okay…so that’s not exactly how it happened.  Clash of Wills IS being released on Leap Day, but my journey down the long and winding road that is romantic fantasy was NOT accompanied by Paul McCartney ballads. You could say I was clueless.

Come read about it over at TBR.

Clash of Wills Excerpt

If it’s Saturday, it must be SWEET SATURDAY SAMPLE time.  Today I have an excerpt from my upcoming romantic fantasy novella, Clash of Wills.

When an unconventional princess meets a footloose prince, a battle of wits begins…

Princess Samantha’s magical compass will help her locate her long-lost brother, but only if she manages to escape her royal parents for a few weeks. When an unwelcome suitor comes to call, Samantha seizes her chance. She beguiles the prince into taking her north, intending to abandon him at her earliest opportunity. Unfortunately, his captivating good looks and charming manner present an unforeseen complication—especially when she is forced to accept help from the very man she has deceived.

To maintain his bachelorhood, handsome Prince Wills is not above deception. Although reluctantly entangled in Samantha’s scheme, he vows to protect her…until a lie threatens to destroy their alliance.  Can his powerful attraction to Samantha overcome his mistrust?  And can they survive a dangerous quest to the wild and magical Uncharted Region?

Princess Samantha sprawled on her stomach as she studied the dog-eared pages of an atlas with such concentration one might think she intended to absorb them. Her fingertip traced a path on the map from her current location in the Kingdom of Paloran to the Uncharted Region where wizards were said to roam. A round silver instrument rested on the rug next to the worn atlas. Set in a clam-shaped metallic shell, it resembled a pocket watch. Although it had a needle similar to that on a compass, there were no directional markings. Samantha blew on the needle; it danced in a circle and stopped in the same spot as before.
When Nanny entered the bedchamber, Samantha quickly snapped the device closed and
covered it with the atlas. A look of sympathy crossed Nanny’s plump, youthful face, but she pretended as if she hadn’t seen anything. “Your Highness, isn’t the crown prince of Insolitia calling on you shortly?”

“Another royal boor to look me over? I cannot wait.”

“We’d best be getting you ready.”

“Father will not return until tomorrow, and Mother has gone to town today, so—”

No, Your Highness.”

“Come now, Nanny. It will be amusing.”

“Absolutely not.”

****

The seams of Nanny’s elaborate, borrowed gown fought to contain her ample flesh. “I can’t breathe,” she groaned. “How do you stand it?”

“Take shallow breaths,” advised Samantha.
