EPIC Finalist TOURNAMENT OF CHANCE by S.G. Rogers

EPICTOCI was just informed that my fantasy novel, Tournament of Chance, is a finalist in the EPIC eBook Awards. In Tournament, a young woman pushes back against a brutal monarch when she discovers his promise of upward mobility is actually a sham designed to keep the peasants in their place. If you enjoy sword & sorcery, time-travel, magic, dragons, and characters determined to prevail against treachery and deceit, this novel is for you.

What Amazon readers are saying:

“It’s fast paced and fascinating! I loved Heather, and Dane, and Jo, and Shimmer, and…You know, I loved everyone. This was a completely developed world.” – Kaitlin

“I was riveted by Heather’s story. SG Rogers kept me on the edge of my seat because of her fast pacing – I just had to know what happened next.” – Muddy Rose Reviews

“[A] captivating story about a young girl who crashes through the crystal ceiling of the kingdom she lives in by challenging the upper class in the Tournament of Chance.  Heather is a plucky, strong character who will appeal to young adults… It’s fabulous!” – Anteater1982

“What Reviewers are saying:

“I loved this book! It is fast-paced and engaging, and I honestly couldn’t put the book down! The characters were very real and I grew to love them. I admired Heather’s perseverance, and how she continued to come up with new solutions when the original plan failed. This has fantasy mixed in with time travel, which made for a fun, unique twist on the genre. Usually, I get a little confused with time travel tales, but not with this one. With each time period, more and more of the story was connected, and more aspects of the tale were explained. I loved seeing all the characters having to put their differences and backgrounds aside to work together to overthrow an evil king. This is fantasy at its finest, with kings and dragons, princesses and tournaments, and of course, magic and romance! Rogers is a talented writer, and I will definitely be reading more of her books.” – The Reading Retreat

“I loved every character in this book.  Dane was very swoon-worthy.  I loved how the relationship between Heather and Dane wasn’t rushed. I loved watching both characters grow and develop in this story.  They both changed for the better.  Heather was no damsel in distress and that is what I loved about her.  She was able to throw a knife and shoot arrows better than anybody.  Manny was hilarious!!!  He has a great since of humor.  Shimmer was very wise.  He was a great leader to follow.  I was glad Jovander got to meet Heather again after 8 years.  There wasn’t a character I didn’t like.  Each had something I loved about them.” – Ever and Ever Sight

“I really love how unique all the ideas in this book are. It’s not your basic fantasy and magic novel. It has a unique foundation in which S.G. Rogers enthralls you from the very beginning and doesn’t let you go. You experience emotions all over the spectrum and S.G. makes you really believe these are living, breathing characters. She paints a beautiful story that I just did not want to end.” – Book Worm Brandy

Wicked Chess – Excerpt from TOURNAMENT OF CHANCE by S.G. Rogers

dreamstimefree_48822A vast chessboard spread out on the lawn next to the castle gardens. The king sipped a glass of chilled white wine as he finished his move.

“Ponder that, my dear Lord Survill,” he crowed.

“My word, Your Majesty, you’ve got me on the run,” Survill exclaimed.

Various young pages stood on the checkered lawn, in chess piece costumes. Although a shady canopy had been set up for the king and his opponent so they could play their game in comfort, the pages waited in the fierce sunlight. As sweat dripped from underneath their hot and heavy paper-maché headdresses, the boys struggled to stand at attention.

Minister Uspy hastened from the castle toward the chessboard.

“Please forgive the interruption, Your Majesty, but I have news.”

King Chance’s brow creased in annoyance. “Has Jovander or that wretched girl been located? Hester, wasn’t it?”

“Heather is the name. They both have vanished, Your Majesty. And I’m afraid that Lord Embrue has not returned from Jagged Peaks, nor the soldiers that accompanied him,” Uspy said.

King Chance waved his fingers, dismissively. “No doubt they have fallen into a game of cards or a bit of debauchery somewhere. Embrue’s success at Merrymouth may have gone to his head.”

“That’s entirely possible, Your Majesty; however Embrue’s steed was found wandering the countryside yesterday. Several mounts from the king’s army have turned up as well,” Uspy said.

“Send Lord Tether with the cavalry to question the villagers about Embrue. If you get no answers, burn Jagged Peaks down.”

“And if the villagers cooperate?”

“Burn it anyway. The commoners must understand I am in charge.”

Uspy left. King Chance returned his attention toward the chessboard, where his bishop had just keeled over from sunstroke. “I’m going to need a new bishop. Drag that boy to the dungeon and beat him for having spoiled the game.”

Take the Shot – Excerpt from TOURNAMENT OF CHANCE: DRAGON REBEL

The lava tunnel opened halfway up the inner slope of volcanic crater. Heather, Manny, and Shimmer joined Dane and Joe as they peeked out from behind a tree. An impressively large brown dragon sat on a dais of white granite on the crater floor some distance below. A multifaceted Dragonstone rested next to the creature, its obsidian surface glowing with an intense inner light.

“I’ve never seen the Dragonstone shine like that before. It must be fairly bursting with magic,” Dane murmured.

“What say you, Heather?” Shimmer asked. “Can you destroy the Dragonstone from here?”

“We should get closer, old boy. Not even Sir Bast could have made that shot,” Manny said.

“Heather can do it,” Joe said.

Dane gave her an encouraging smile. “I know she can.”

Heather let a little silt drift through her fingertips to check the wind. She glanced at Shimmer and nodded. Nocking an arrow in her bowstring, she sighted her target. “Just say the word.”

An enormous troll suddenly emerged from the stand of trees ringing the lake, with a flaming spear in his fist. He ran toward the dais, roaring. The brown dragon yawned.

“He’s bored,” Manny chuckled.

As the troll threw his spear, the dragon morphed into an elderly man. With a wave of his hand, the spear splintered into a shower of sparks. With another gesture, the graybeard turned the troll into a dragon. The creature twisted into the air and then sped off into the sky.

“That man is a wizard!” Joe exclaimed.

After a long pause, Heather spoke. “Shimmer? Do I take the shot?”

But Shimmer was silent. Heather finally lowered her bow and glanced over. He and Manny were stunned beyond measure, and the color had completely drained from Dane’s face. She glanced at Joe, but he shrugged in bewilderment.

“Will somebody tell us what’s going on?” she asked.

Heather’s skill is archery.  King Chance’s skill is treachery. Who will win?

Like Beasts in the Field – Excerpt from TOURNAMENT OF CHANCE

Vibrating with shock, Heather stared at the ground. As Lady Felicia was declared this year’s winner of the Tournament of Chance, the commoners began to boo. The sound began low, but built until it resembled the groan of a hurricane. To show their dissatisfaction with the decision, people threw apple cores and rocks onto the field. Pushing and fighting broke out. When a few of the men stumbled through the rope barricades, the king’s guardsmen closed ranks. Within short order, a phalanx of mounted guards joined the melee and created a buffer between the commoners and the royals. Even so, the booing grew louder.

In the meantime, the king, queen, and other members of court rose from their seats and filed toward the castle as quickly as their dignity would allow. The queen made no effort to mask her disgust.

“Listen to those thugs! We try to be nice to the commoners, but they don’t appreciate it.”

“You don’t understand, Chelsea. Commoners lack the capacity for higher thought. It’s best to treat them like beasts in the field,” the king replied.

If she’d been slapped, Heather could not have been more wounded. Tears pricked her eyelids. The king and queen were talking about her family, her friends — and her. When the king pointed an accusatory finger in her direction, however, she preferred the insults to what came next.

“Arrest her for inciting a riot,” he told his guardsmen.

“What!” Heather gasped.

King’s guards strode over to confiscate her bow and quiver. Ustin and Obie tried to push through the crowd to come to Heather’s aid, but they were intercepted by guardsmen. Despite Joe’s protests, the guards took her into custody. As she was hauled away, Heather shook her head in disbelief. If this were a nightmare or some kind of joke, she’d long since ceased to be amused.

Literary Bonsai – The Shaping of Tournament of Chance
When I wrote Tournament of Chance, I didn’t start out to write a speculative fiction piece.  It began as a short story about a girl who enters an archery contest, hoping to win a royal title and a place at court. The narrative ended just as a revolution begins, cutting off the story right when the action was getting good. (MORE)

Heather’s Disguise – Excerpt from TOURNAMENT OF CHANCE

A loud insistent pounding at the front door startled Heather awake the next morning. A few moments later, she heard Ustin having a row with her father in the kitchen. Heather’s mother, still clad in a dressing gown, stepped into the bedchamber. She held a lantern aloft.

“Get up, Heather.”

“What’s happening, Mother?”

“Ustin and Kitty are here.”

“Kitty, too?”

“Aye. Put on your hunting gear, quickly.”

Aghast, Heather stared at Rose, wide-eyed. “But I’m going to the
tournament today. I’m to wear my best clothes.”

“Don’t argue with me. Ustin says you’re in danger.”

“What?”

“There are men canvassing the town for you right now, so there is
no time to waste. You must travel in disguise.”

Heather grasped a hank of her thick auburn waist-length hair. “How
are we going to hide this?”

Rose produced a pair of shears. “We can’t.”

Excerpt:

“It isn’t wise to tell people too much incredible information at once,” Shimmer said. “I told them what they needed to know to keep them from rushing into an armed conflict they couldn’t win. They’ll learn the whole truth in due course.”

Heather cocked her head. “And this quest to Boravagg? Have you told me only what I need to know?”

Before Shimmer could answer, Dane, Manny, and Joe appeared. The sleek muscles of Dane’s bare arms and torso glistened from his recent swim. Blushing, Heather averted her eyes.

“I wish to be completely honest, Heather. This venture is horribly dangerous, potentially fatal, and with an uncertain outcome,” Shimmer said. “Knowing that, do you want to change your mind?”
